PA Books

The white coat ceremony is prestigious in any PA program. Once you’ve graduated, you realize that the white coat actually only has one purpose: to hold the various books and resources a PA uses when graduating. Each specialist will have favorites, and the list will continue to grow as this blog grows. Surviving PA School

If you’ve been accepted to PA school, this is the book for you! John Bielinski has a list of accomplishments that is a mile long, this is just one more great example of his dedication to PAs.

I suggest this book to just about every PA or medical student who will listen. For those of us in emergency medicine, this is a quick, portable brain. It is simple, and is comprehensive enough for a beginner- though I still occasionally reference it even now.

Another great EMRA book. This is a favorite chief complaint resource which helps with differential diagnoses. A definite must for a student!

Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia

 Another classic pharmacologic guide. Little known fact: you can tell how long ago the PA with said booklet graduated based off the color of the book (it changes every year). My bright green 2008 reference probably needs to be replaced!

Dale Dubin’s brightly colored books are the “go to” to learn EKGs

Pocket Medicine (Ring Notebook)

Pocket Medicine (Ring Notebook)

This book was my staple in PA School. I organized it, added hole punched index cards and made notes all over it. It was small enough for a coat but informative enough to be a great reference!

Elemental Medicine

This is also a great book for those who want a general overview of laboratory tests in medicine. It’s an easy, quick, read (because who has time to go back through textbooks!) and one I commonly suggest PA Students and practicing PAs take a look at! Plus, John is awesome, so there’s that.

Physician Assistant Acute Care Protocols

Physician Assistant Acute Care Protocols

Okay, so this book is pricey, BUT.. if you are working with a practice or supervising physician and need some frame of reference for PAs who see patients under the optimized team practice model, where you are NOT staffing all patients, it is worth the investment!

LANGE Q&A Physician Assistant Examination

 A good resource for questions. This was probably the closest to the recent PANRE questions out there (check out the app too). The summaries are too basic, but the questions were worth the investment.

A Comprehensive Review For the Certification and Recertification Examinations for Physician Assistants

This book is also a good resource for questions and quick disease summaries.

PANCE Prep Pearls

This book comes highly recommended by many different people! This is the newest edition and the author, Dwayne, is passionate about educating PAs!

This is a great resource for those working in pediatrics! It’s written by Pediatric Residents and is a staple in most pediatric hospitals. Technically, it’s small enough to fit in your lab coat, but it’s probably better suited for your bag or desk.
